If you haven't yet made it to the Garage Art Center's latest show, there's still time. “LIC Morphology,” a solo exhibition by painter Paul Fabozzi, has been on view in Bayside since early September and runs through September 27th, giving families and art lovers alike a couple more weeks to stop in.
The paintings grew out of something Fabozzi has been doing for well over a decade: walking the streets beneath the elevated train tracks near Queensboro Plaza, camera in hand, watching that stretch of the city shift and rebuild itself over and over. What started as documentation eventually became the raw material for a body of paintings that turn a very literal, very local landscape into something more abstract, layered, and personal.
Fabozzi isn't just a working artist, he's also chair of the Art and Design department at St. John's University and directs an artist residency program in Italy, so this show carries some real academic and professional weight behind it. But at its core, it's a very Queens story: one person, one neighborhood, watched closely enough over enough years to turn into art.
Don't Miss: Free Artist Talk on September 19
If your schedule allows for just one visit, aim for Saturday, September 19th, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. Fabozzi will be on hand for a free public talk exploring how his process, and his relationship to place, shapes the finished work. It's a rare chance to hear directly from the artist about how years of neighborhood walks turned into paint on canvas. The talk is recommended for ages 12 and up, and no ticket is required, though an RSVP is a smart move given the gallery's small footprint.

The Garage Art Center is a small nonprofit gallery tucked into a converted garage space in Bayside, and it's built its reputation on giving local and visiting artists room to show a full, focused body of work rather than just a piece or two. If you haven't been before, this is a good excuse to finally check it out, and if you have, it's worth a return trip before this one wraps up at the end of the month.
