New York City Public Schools has released its official calendar for the 2026–2027 school year, and it’s grabbing a lot of attention. There are the standard 180 instructional days, but the layout looks a little different. As always when Labor Day falls in the second week of September, school is starting a week later. Here's a full breakdown of the key dates, breaks, and changes parents should plan around.
The Basics: First and Last Day
- First day of school: Thursday, September 10, 2026
- Last day of school: Monday, June 28, 2027
That start date is notably later than in recent years — Labor Day falls on September 7, 2026, which means teachers report that Tuesday, September 8th. This is not novel as it is decided by the Teachers’ contract, it is standard practice for decades. Students report 2 - 3 days after teachers to allow for staff development and classroom preparation. The upside of a late start is a longer summer; the downside is that many camps and summer programs wrap up well before September 10, so families should plan ahead for a possible childcare gap in early September. There are some holidays missing this year that are normally on the calendar because they fall on weekends, and election day is remote so the school year will end the final week in June as it typically does.

Election Day Is Different This Year
In past years, Election Day was a full day off for students. For 2026–2027, that's changing: on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, schools will hold remote instruction for all students rather than closing entirely. Parents should plan for their kids to be learning from home that day, not off from school altogether. Your school will likely prepare students in advance, so learning will go smoothly
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Conference dates are staggered by school level, which will be helpful for families with kids at more than one level. Also, the fact that all conferences are via video conference does make it easier for families and teachers alike. Evening and early-release conference dates are spread across the fall and spring:
Fall conferences:
- Elementary & Pre-K: Sept. 30 (evening) and Nov. 5 (early release, 3 hours)
- Middle school & D75: Sept. 23 (evening) and Nov. 12 (early release, 3 hours)
- High school, K–12, and 6–12 schools: Sept. 24 and Nov. 19 (evening), Nov. 20 (early release, 3 hours)
Spring conferences:
- Elementary & Pre-K: Mar. 3 (early release) and May 26 (evening)
- Middle school & D75: Mar. 4 (early release) and May 13 (evening)
- High school, K–12, and 6–12 schools: Mar. 18 (evening) and Mar. 19 (early release)
Double-check with your child's specific school, since individual schools sometimes adjust these slightly.
Regents Exams and Other No-Student Days
- January Regents: Jan. 26–29, 2027
- June Regents: June 15–18 and June 21–25, 2027
- Feb. 1, 2027: Professional development day for high schools and 6–12 schools (no students)
- June 8, 2027: Clerical day for 3-K through middle school and D75 programs (no students)
- June 10, 2027: Anniversary Day/Chancellor's Conference Day (no students, all levels)
Quick Planning Tips for Families
- Book summer camp or childcare through Labor Day week and beyond — with school starting Sept. 10, the coverage gap after most camps end could be longer than you're used to.
- Mark the staggered parent-teacher conference dates now, especially if you have kids in different grade bands — the early-release times differ by school level.
- Remember Nov. 3 is remote, not a day off — kids will need a device and a quiet space to learn from home. Make sure to check your child’s device so it is remote ready for that day.
- Note the school year runs through June 28, 2027 — yes, that’s a Monday.
